Buxton railway station serves the spa town of Buxton, about an hour by train from Manchester. It’s the highest English town in the country (it’s 300m above sea level) and sits on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
The station is located in the heart of the town (just 4 mins walk to the centre) and close to the University of Derby. There is provision for bicycle and car parking at the station, and the building has toilets and step-free access to the platforms.
The town has impressive Victorian and Georgian architecture, with attractions that celebrate Buxton’s past as well as a lively contemporary arts and theatre scene, with a healthy schedule of local events. Families may enjoy the grand, historic Pavilion Gardens or the nearby Go Ape. Those seeking something more active should head to the Peak District National Park for abseiling, hiking, walking, climbing and caving opportunities. Don’t miss Poole’s Cavern, too, one of the most impressive limestone caves in the area.
