It is believed that Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, set her famous book in the area near Strines station and on the line between Marple and New Mills. Her relatives lived in the area and she would often come to visit. This literary connection – and the glorious setting – has inspired the creation of The Edith Nesbit Literary Trail that covers 15 km and takes about 5 hours.
This long, circular walk starts at New Mills bus station (nearest railway station is New Mills Central) and takes walkers on well-defined paths and roads, with some significant ascents and descents.
A useful leaflet has been created to provide directions and interesting historical information along the route.
