Strines railway station is on the Hope Valley Line and serves the village of Strines and the hamlet of Turf Lea. It is believed that Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, set her famous book in the area near Strines station and on the line between Marple and New Mills. The village grew up around a print works, of which a reservoir remains, providing a lovely place for a walk. In the centre of the lake is a Grade-II listed dovecote that is believed to date from the 1850s.
Those who seek a more vigorous walk will enjoy the easy access to the Midshires Way and the Goyt Way, or hike up into the hills towards Mellor for some wonderful views. The intrepid can even walk into the Peak District from Strines.
There is a campsite near the river Goyt and a local pub for some refreshment after a day of excursions.
