Stockport railway station serves the town of Stockport and is just 10 mins from Manchester by train. The station is staffed, has a ticket office and ticket machines, as well as shops, toilets and waiting rooms. There are lifts from the station subway and the platform has step-free access.
Emerge from the station into a town that is gradually catching up with the vibrant reputation of it’s big brother (Manchester), with a growing number of independent shops, cafes, and businesses. There are ‘foodie Fridays’ once a month and live music at the market, while daily delights can be procured at The Produce Hall, where food vendors nestle inside the 160-year-old market building.
History buffs will find plenty to satisfy. The attractive historic architecture bears testament to the borough’s former glory as the home of the country’s hatting industry – find out more about this at The Hat Works museum and cafe. Visitors should also visit the 15th century Staircase House, Stockport Air Raid Shelters and Bramall Hall. No trip is complete without a few snaps of the Stockport Viaduct, which was built in 1840 and, with its 27 brick arches, lays claim to being the largest brick structure in the UK.
Some famous faces that started life in Stockport include actress Claire Foy (The Crown) and the indie band Blossoms, while tennis-player Fred Perry was given ‘Freedom of the Borough’.
